The Unexpected Happens
Why an Emergency Kit Guide is More Essential Today Than Ever

At Living Place, we believe that a true home is more than just four walls and a roof; it’s a sanctuary of safety and well-being for you and your family. In an era of increasing uncertainty, where unforeseen events—from natural disasters to broader crises—can strike without warning, preparedness is the cornerstone of that safety.

It is because of this deep concern for the future of your family and our community that Living Place has dedicated itself to compiling and sharing with you this small Emergency Kit or Survival Kit guidance manual. More than a list of items, this manual is a call to action, a plan to empower the population with the resources and knowledge necessary to face the adversities that may arise in the future.

Inspired by international best practices, such as the acclaimed Swedish manual “If Crisis or War Comes”, and adapted to the specific reality and challenges of Portugal, we want you to feel confident and autonomous. We believe that by being prepared, you not only protect those you love most, but also become a vital part of the resilience of your community. Learn why a guidance manual for your emergency kit is more essential today than ever. Don’t forget that the unexpected happens.

Echoes of the Past and the Unknown Future

Looking back, the past few years have constantly reminded us of the fragility of our systems and the unpredictability of the future. Who could have predicted the extent of a global pandemic that has paralyzed economies and isolated families? Or the intensification and frequency of extreme weather events that once seemed like rare exceptions? And the wars that plague us—have you ever thought about them in depth?

In Portugal, despite always having Civil Protection, we live in the memory of summers ravaged by devastating forest fires, which year after year consume thousands of hectares and claim lives, forcing mass evacuations and a desperate fight for survival. The threat of earthquakes, particularly in the Lisbon region and the south of the country, is a geological constant, reminding us of the great earthquake of 1755 and the perennial need for preparation. The floods, which cyclically affect our cities and coastal areas, demonstrate how the force of nature can quickly subvert normality. And the wars that destroy families and cities, putting the environment, the economy, the territorial integrity of each country, international law and, most importantly, the lives of each one of us at risk.

On the global stage, the resurgence of conflicts and wars in different parts of the planet is occurring at an unprecedented level. The shockwaves are being felt in the economy, energy prices, political stability and the security of supply chains. Although distant, these events can have direct impacts on our daily lives, from a widespread blackout in Portugal with multiple origins that interrupts electricity and communications for days, to shortages of essential goods.

The future is unpredictable. No one has a crystal ball to predict the next major crisis, whether it’s a natural disaster exacerbated by climate change, a massive technological failure, or a geopolitical event that drastically changes our daily lives. But unpredictability doesn’t mean powerlessness. It means that preparation is our greatest mitigation tool.

The Urgency of a Guidance Manual: Your Safety Map

It is in this context of increasing uncertainty that Living Place underlines the crucial importance of a clear and comprehensive guide to creating your Emergency Kit. It is not just about stockpiling cans of food and batteries, but about understanding:

  • Why: Understand the specific risks that surround us in Portugal and around the world, from seismic risk to the threat of fires or the possibility of a prolonged blackout, as well as wars.
  • Which: Know exactly which essential items to include in your kit – drinking water and purification methods, non-perishable food, an adequate first aid kit, safe sources of lighting and heating, basic hygiene and tools – with their specifications and ideal quantities to ensure your autonomy for at least 72 hours.
  • How: Learn how to use each item effectively. Know how to purify water, how to provide basic first aid, how to communicate when networks fail and how to manage hygiene in adverse conditions.
  • Where: Identify where to store the kit for easy access and, crucially, define safe assembly points and evacuation routes, both inside and outside your location.

Protecting People and Families: Our Commitment and Your Ability

At Living Place, your safety is one of our priorities. This manual, inspired by reference guides such as the Swedish “If Crisis or War Comes” and adapted to our Portuguese reality, is our way of equipping you with the necessary knowledge and tools. We want you to feel prepared, confident and capable of protecting your family and yourself, minimizing problems and ensuring well-being in the face of any unforeseen event.

Your individual and family preparedness has a multiplier effect: by being self-sufficient, you not only protect your loved ones, but you also relieve pressure on emergency and civil protection services, allowing them to focus on the most critical situations and the most vulnerable populations. It is an act of active citizenship and solidarity.

Invest in your preparation. Invest in your peace of mind. Because at Living Place, we believe that being prepared is the foundation for living with greater security and resilience, whatever the unpredictable future that lies ahead.
