Insect Hotel Environmental Education Workshop

Build a wildlife refuge with the Insect Hotel Environmental Education Workshop from Living Place. A hands-on environmental education activity to protect pollinators and rural and urban gardens. Insects may inspire fear, but they are great helpers for our gardens or vegetable patches because of their role in pollination (of about 90% of the fruits we eat) and pest control.
This workshop aims to demystify the world of “animals”, while raising awareness of the importance of insects and the construction and installation of shelters for them.

What is the Insect Hotel Environmental Education Workshop activity?

An Insect Hotel is an artificial structure built with natural materials — such as reeds, pine cones, hollowed-out wood, and clay — that serves as shelter and nesting sites for various species of beneficial insects. This workshop addresses the need to create biodiversity 'oases' in gardens, schools, and urban parks, helping to combat the decline of pollinators and other beneficial pests.

The Importance of Little Giants

In this environmental education session, we explored the fundamental role that insects play in ecosystems:

  • Pollination: Essential for food production and plant reproduction.

  • Biological Control: Attracting 'gardener's friends' like ladybugs.

  • Ecosystem Balance: Understanding the food chain and the life cycle.

How does the Insect Hotel Environmental Education Workshop work?

During the activity, participants learn how to select the correct materials and assemble the hotel structure in a way that attracts different species. It is ideal for:

  • Schools and Kindergartens: Establishing a permanent observation point in the schoolyard.

  • Community Gardens: To improve crop productivity naturally.

  • Companies (Team Building): A collaborative project with a positive and visible environmental impact.

Benefits:

  • For students: Children and young people will become true architects of nature, building a luxury hotel for pollinating insects and learning how important they are for life on the planet.
  • For teachers: A fun, hands-on activity that connects students with nature and addresses topics such as ecology, entomology and sustainability.
  • For school: A great way to encourage students to care for the environment and the importance of biodiversity. The ‘Insect Hotel’ workshop is a powerful pedagogical tool to transform future citizens into more conscious citizens.

Why is the Insect Hotel important?

  • Awareness: Students will understand the importance of pollinating insects for the planet and the need to protect them.
  • Action: Students will be able to put their own knowledge into practice by building an insect hotel and contributing to the conservation of biodiversity.
  • Creation: Students develop construction, creativity and teamwork skills.

Pollinating insects are in danger! By building an insect hotel, we can offer them a safe home and ensure plant pollination, guaranteeing food production for everyone. Imagine a world where pollinating insects have their own luxury homes! With this workshop, we can create an oasis for these superheroes of nature and ensure a greener and healthier future. Our workshop is adapted to the age range of the students and can be customized according to the insect species in the region. We provide all the necessary materials for the construction and operation of the Insect Hotel Environmental Education Workshop.

Year-round activity.

We live Sustainability!!

1 - What is an Insect Hotel and why is it important?

An insect hotel is an artificial structure built with natural materials (such as pine cones, reeds, and wood) that serves as shelter and breeding ground for beneficial insects. Its importance is vital, as approximately 90% of the fruits we consume depend on pollination, and these insects also play a role in natural pest control, balancing the ecosystem of vegetable gardens and flower gardens.

2 – What are the benefits of this workshop for students and teachers?

For students, the workshop demystifies the fear of "creatures" and develops manual skills, creativity, and teamwork, transforming them into "architects of nature." For teachers, it is a practical pedagogical tool that allows them to address curricular themes such as ecology, entomology, and sustainability in a fun and memorable way.

3 – Where can the Insect Hotel be installed and what is included?

The hotel can be installed in school gardens, educational gardens, or courtyards. Living Place provides all the necessary materials for construction, and the workshop is adapted to the age range of the participants and the insect species of the region. It is an activity available throughout the year that directly contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 4, 11, 13, and 15).
